Crisis Existence of Human

Victor E. Frankl is a neurologist, a leading psychiatrist in Europe. The time span of his life is almost throughout the 20th century. He was born in 1905 and died in 1992. Frankl had been a prisoner of the Nazi camp as a victim of wrongful arrest. He was arrested along with his parents, brother and wife who were pregnant. Frankl was separated from his family and held in four different camps from 1942 to 1945 including the Auschwitz camp during World War II.

Frankl is the originator of the logotherapy theory which is a blend of existential analysis and humanistic in psychological theories. Logotherapy is a psychological cure through meaning. Man’s main impetus in life is not pleasure but the discovery and search of what we personally find meaningful.

In this book, Frankl suffered torture, ferocity and cruelty while in camp. No one really cared about him even though he said honestly that he was a neurologist and psychiatrist. He was treated the same as the other prisoners in the camp. While in the camp and together with other prisoners, Frankl learned to find the meaning of life through the torture he experienced as a prisoner of the camp. According to Frankl, humans cannot avoid suffering, but humans can choose how to overcome it, find meaning in suffering and move forward with new goals. Although, Frankl realizes that every human being has a different meaning of life and is inseparable from the background of the suffering they experience.

Frankl’s torture that he never forgot was when he had to go naked without wearing any clothes and watch the hairs in his body shaved clean, with nothing left. Interestingly, at the end of this book Frankl wrote that he was the only person who survived in his family. His parents, brother and pregnant wife were killed in the camp due to torture. Frankl felt that the Nazi camp was one of the phenomena of natural selection made by humans and trapping humans to find a way to survive.📚📚📚

The Art of War

“Disciplined and calm, to await the appearance of disorder and hubbub among the enemies: this is the art of retaining self-possession” – chap. 7 Maneuvering.

Sun Tzu’s The Art of War is the most important book ever written on military strategy. Its masterful advice has been followed by generals, state, politicians and businessmen for two thousand years – producing equal success in the battlefield, in the political arena and in the corporate boardroom.

This book consists of two parts. The first part is about Sun Tzu’s ideas, written in thirteen Chinese chapters translated by Lionel Giles, which contains strategies and tactics for dealing with enemies. The thirteen parts are :
Laying Plans
Waging War
Attack by Stratagem
Tactical Dispositions
Energy
Weak Points and Strong
Maneuvering
Variation of Tactics
The Army on the March
Terrain
The Nine Situations
The Attack by Fire
The Use of Spies

The second part contains comments and notes on ideas written by Sun Tzu in the first part. The comments and notes in this book place more emphasis on the use of the Chinese characters that Sun Tzu wrote. This book is highly recommended for those who want to learn more about the principles of self-discipline.📚📚

Be Happy

This book has been a favourite book since I was in high school besides The Art of Happiness written by the Dalai Lama. This book is translated from the original title Opening The Door of Your Heart. Ajahn Brahm wrote this book based on the experiences he had while being a monk.

This book is a collection of stories written in three parts and each section contains 108 stories. The stories in this book show life experiences that can be found in everyday life written with light, witty and full of meaning.

This book invites its readers to be aware of every state of life experienced as a matter which is free from good, bad, wrong and right values. For Ajahn Brahm life is not only about good, bad, right, and wrong but how humans are able to forgive and accept themselves.

Even though this book was written by a monk, the stories in this book are delivered very realistic and universal. I highly recommend this book to be read by anyone, anytime, anywhere, under any circumstances and regardless of what you currently believe. 📚📚

Story of Psychology

Is it true that psychology is a science that understands human psychology? or is it just behavioral science? Is it true that psychology and philosophy are different? or actually psychology is part of a philosophy that is self-exclusive?.

The writer of a history of psychology has considerable liberty in the selection of his material, for as Ebbinghaus once remarked, “psychology has a long past but a brief history.” Indeed, one is inclined to doubt if the time is yet ripe for an historical approach to its problems.

A perusal of the volume before us does not entirely dispel this doubt. Many will find the selection of topics arbitrary and will seek in vain for certain evidences of systematic development which a historical survey might be expected to reveal.

The volume is divided into three parts. The first treats of the general tendencies of psychology, the second of the development of the fundamental concepts of psychology, while the third aims to sketch a history of the most important psychological theories.

In the first part we find metaphysical and empirical psychology contrasted. Dualism and monism are taken as the categories which provide the metaphysical bases of the science. The discussion is hardly adequate. The brevity with which the views of ancient and modern philosophers are presented renders the account less satisfying than that which can be secured from the average student’s history of philosophy.

Neither here nor elsewhere in the volume is the important problem of the body and mind relation mentioned. Under the heading, Empirical Psychology, is traced the historical development of descriptive and explanatory psychology. The latter culminates with a section devoted to experimental psychology. Beginning with the contributions of Weber and Fechner, the experiments on reaction-time, sense perception, and the determination of threshold values are the ones chiefly emphasized.

One misses a reference to the epoch-making experiments of Ebbinghaus on memory. Some space is devoted to Ach’s work in establishing the awareness of meaning and relation, but unfortunately the statement of his differentiation of these two forms of imageless content is made ambiguous through an evident error in translation.

The Art to Think

Medical and technological advancements, enchanting music, great poetry and impressive works of art are some of the results of an amazing machine called the “human mind”. The human mind and our cognitive abilities are impressive in many respects.

However, on the other hand, we are also prone to errors that frequently prevent us from engaging in rational thinking. Errors lead to faulty reasoning, poor decisions, ineffective problem solving and, unfortunately, sometimes potentially tragic consequences.

Rolf Dobelli, a Swiss writer, novelist and entrepreneur, holds a PhD in economic philosophy from the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland developed a deep interest and passion and became a student of social and cognitive psychology, both critical areas which lead us to understand how people think, interpret, take decisions and evaluate individuals, events and situations around them.

The book is based on the research carried out in the fields of cognitive and social psychology
over the past three decades.

Illusion of superiority, social comparison bias results in people not being open to suggestions fromothers and reduces collaboration between people. The social comparison bias has reached toxic levels in academia. Both primacy effect and recency effect create wrong perceptions. First and last impressions dominatemeaning and what happens in between does not have a significant impact. Dobelli clarifies that “whatyou master in one area is difficult to transfer to another area. Cases exist of CEO’s who are charismaticleaders in office and hopeless duds at home.”

The default effect and status-quo bias reveal that we have a strong tendency to cling to the way thingsare, even if this puts us at a disadvantage. Real estate agents and companies may benefit from the fear ofregret when combined with a last chance offer. Journalists may cash on the salience effect. The salienceeffect influences not only how we interpret the past but also how we imagine the future. Even professionalanalysts tend to neglect the hidden slow-to-develop discrete facts.

Happiness,Just About Art

The first time I read this book was when I was in high school, when thoughts about suicide always existed and never left my brain. Since high school until now I have never been bored reading this book, even though repeatedly. Maybe this book is quite ‘heavy’, but the Dalai Lama and Howard C. Cutler have managed to explain to me that happiness is quite simple and doesn’t need to be as complicated as it is now.

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, a Buddhist monk, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism and leader of the Tibetan government and Howard C. Cutler, an American writer and psychiatrist who practices in Phoenix, Arizona, expert in the science of human happiness initiated the writing of the book The Art Of Happiness. This book is the result of Howard C. Cutler’s interview with the Dalai Lama about happiness and how to find happiness written by presenting two different points of view, namely spiritualism and scientism.

The spirituality side of this book presented by the Dalai Lama explains that to be happy humans need to practice compassion towards themselves and others. Compassion can be done by believing the basic similarities in every human being and trying to practice empathy. Empathy is a way to connect with humans to each other. The key to this process is the development of various higher levels of awareness of emotions and mental states. The ideas presented by the Dalai Lama in this book are more directed towards Buddhism especially in terms of exposing suffering.

This book invites readers to realize that the happiness of every human being is determined by himself not things that exist outside of human beings. Every human being has their own definition of happiness that they understand. Besides that every human being has their own way of achieving happiness and this is what is meant as ‘art’ in this book. Every human being has an ‘art’ to achieve happiness in his life that can be seen from the perspective of dealing with every problem.

The definition of happiness will not have any impact without being accompanied by a perspective that is in accordance with the problem. Our perspective on life will determine how far our understanding of happiness is and how influential our definition of happiness has. Almost all problems in life are only about how we view them and how we react to them.

This book is highly recommended for those who need a clear explanation of how happiness works in our lives even in unexpected circumstances.

Sapiens Are Us

“100,000 years ago, at least six human species inhabited the earth. Today there is just one US.”

This provocative book challenges everything we believed and makes us rethink all that we have ever read. This is a book which is entertaining and yet challenging all our concepts. The Homo sapiens brain is 2% of the body weight but consumes 25% of the body energy.

There was high mortality in childbirth because the large head of the baby lead to death and early birth lead to better survival. Early birth meant that the baby needed to be looked after. Therefore, the mother had to look after the baby, and this could only be possible in a tribal system where the mother could be looked after.

Evolution thus favoured forming strong ties and large tribes. Yuval Noah Harari is an Israeli Professor of History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He wrote “Sapiens” originally in Hebrew and was later translated to other languages including English. The book is organized into four main parts covering last 70,000 years of human history. In 443 pages (English edition), Harari takes us through an exciting journey through human history. 📚📖

  • The cognitive revolution – Harari argues that it is our ability to talk and believe in collective myth that led to the unprecedented growth of the human species. He argues that it is this ability that enabled us to be the only dominant human species on the planet. This part also takes a look at the day-to-day lives of early humans and explores the link between human growth and extinction of other animal species
  • The agricultural revolution ‑ Harari argues that for the farmers, this revolution mainly offered suffering and death. This is an interesting conclusion since we think about agricultural evolution as a major achievement of the human species. In more recent times, we have even started romanticizing farming and agriculture. This part also covers the evolution of language and bureaucracy.
  • The unification of humanity – Harari argues that even though human culture has been in constant flux through the centuries, there has always been a definite direction to where we are going. Humans across the planet now form one large family. This part also explores the roles played by money, religion, and imperial vision in the unification of humanity.
  • The scientific revolution – This section explores some of the reasons behind rapid industrial and scientific growth of European nations. Harari argues such a rapid advance is made possible by our acceptance of the fact that we know little about the world around us. It is our acceptance of ignorance that fuelled rapid scientific innovations Harari writes that 100,000 years ago, H. sapiens was just one of a number of different human species, all competing for supremacy. Just as today, we see different species of bears or pigs, there were different species of humans. While our own ancestors lived mainly in East Africa, our relatives’ homo neanderthalensis, better known as Neanderthals, inhabited Europe. Another species, Homo erectus, populated Asia, and the island of Java was home to homomsoloensis. Each species adapted to its own environment. Some were big, fearsome hunters, while others were dwarf-like plant gatherers. Today, of course, there is just one human species alive. How did we H. sapiens become so successful and others did not? . About 70,000 years ago, H. sapiens underwent a “cognitive revolution,” Harari writes, which gave them the edge over their rivals to spread from East Africa across the planet. What made H. sapiens so successful is that we are the only animals who are capable of large-scale cooperation. We know how to organize ourselves as nations, companies, and religions, giving us the power to accomplish complex tasks.

H. sapiens have the special ability to unite millions of strangers around commons myths. Ideas such as freedom, human rights, gods, laws, and capitalism exist in our imaginations, yet they can bind us together and motivate us to cooperate on complex tasks.

In summary, this is a book worth reading, with its thought-provoking stories and sometimes unusual ideas, witty language, and its conclusion. But I think that Yuval Noah Harari explained that this book is reductionist and mechanistic enough because it does not provide readers with sufficient arguments to answer questions about the moral implications of scientific and technological change. In addition, Harari’s view of culture and ethical norms as fundamental fiction seems to create a coherent moral framework that is impossible to think about and shape the future of humans because it asks to pretend that humans do not become themselves (apart from the activity of thinking and feeling the subject and moral agents with free will) and only social beings whose culture is built on the facts of the physical world.

Kindly and Mindfulness

Humans have many problems that must be faced, especially in this century. “Realizing that a problem exists” is not enough, it requires virtue and love to release pain while embracing calm in the problem at hand. #AjahnBrahm introduces the method of kindfulness to provide relaxation amid the hubbub and bustle of the world. ☺️

Kindfulness is a simple form of meditation practice that can be done by anyone, anytime and anywhere. Kindfulness method aims to find silence so as to provide calm and relaxation. Being attentive is the key to kindfulness that can be done by:
-Living the present.
-Awareness of the current moment.
-A quiet moment of awareness through the breath.
-Full attention when breathing.

In addition, the kindfulness method needs to be balanced with the feeling of giving up and compassion. What should be to give up?. Awareness of past and future times. When doing kindfulness one thing that needs to be emphasized is the present moment. Whereas compassion is a selfless and unconditional love. #AjahnBrahm wrote this book based on the assumption that mindfulness alone is not enough to have a policy in dealing with life problems.

This book is highly recommended for readers who need a mild therapy of happiness. This book is not fully capable of solving life’s problems but the kindfulness method taught by #AjahnBrahm in this book will provide insight if problems only need to be passed through and experienced.

Education not just formality

Education is not just about curriculum, degree and grades. Education should teach the most essential thing, self-understanding. If education only kills individuality, creativity and authenticity, then education is wrong education and does not develop anything.

#ReneSuhardono, #LintangGustika, #FidellaAnandhita author of #LimitlessCampus invites readers to reinterpret the meaning of education, especially formal education in Indonesia, namely school. This book is written based on the Limitless Campus movement initiated by writers to invite young people to think creatively and work according to their own authenticity.

This book is actually a reflection of the Limitless Campus, social movement initiated by the authors. However, apart from that all of these books invite readers to be more aware of the essence of education and sensitive to the surrounding environment. For years formal education in Indonesia sought to kill individual individuality, creativity and authenticity.

When individuals enter their school they are boxed and their uniqueness is killed slowly. When there are different individuals, the individual is judged as the wrong individual. Current formal education is not even aware that every individual has different intelligence. In addition, the culture of society demands that every individual not stand out, not violate and not be different from others.

Education does not mean anything if it cannot foster awareness, confidence, persistence, caring and authenticity. Every educated individual is unique and has their own legacy. What is the use of school if you don’t understand yourself and have difficulty empathizing?.

This book is highly recommended for those who question the extent to which education has impacted on each individual and the extent to which education has had an impact in overcoming problems in society.

Minimalism is essentialism

In the 21st century the level of human consumption has increased very rapidly. Consumerism has become a lifestyle in this century. Consumerism is a form of social construction built by the mass media if the more goods consumed show the level of financial success.

#TheJoyOfLess a book written by #FrancineJay, a blogger who consistently writes suggestions and shares experiences about a minimalist lifestyle. This book is presented quite systematically. At the beginning of this book provides the basics mindset of minimalist life. Recognizing the usefulness of each item, letting go of attachments to things, enjoying space, being happy with sufficiency, loving without possessing and simple life are the initial parts of this book.📖

The second part of this book is a coherent explanation of the simple method of STREAMLINE minimalist life,
[S]tart over.
[T]rash, treasure, or transfer.
[R]eason for each item.
[E]verything in its place.
[A]ll surfaces clear.
[M]odules.
[L]imits.
[I]f one comes, one goes out.
[N]arrow down.
[E]very day maintenance.

The third part of this book is the application of the STREAMLINE method in each room at home. The fourth part is a reflection of a minimalist lifestyle that can affect family, society and nature. The minimalist concept indirectly becomes an eco-friendly lifestyle.☺️

Minimalism is knowing what is really needed in life and not just on desires that can be fulfilled. This book is highly recommended for those who live every day with lots of things without knowing the essentialy of the items they have.

Relax and Focus

This book was written by #MichaelActonSmith and #AlexJew based on the application of Calm which they made oriented to the practice of mindfulness. What is the practice of mindfulness? Mindfulness is a way to direct awareness at the moment while knowing and accepting physical feelings, thoughts and sensations calmly.

This book has eight main parts:
🏞️Nature
😴Sleep.
✈️Travel.
👫Relationship.
🤝Work.
👦Children.
🎨Creativity.
🍱Food.
And eight sections in this book can be read randomly and don’t need to be sequential. The eight main sections in this book are very close to the practice of mindfulness.

The things I like (maybe this is quite subjective) from this book are the first part that suggests readers to write journals regularly every day because by writing dampens the noise in the mind. In addition, advice on digital detox should be done by all people who are addicted to technology products because unwittingly these technology products provide an opiate effect on human life.

This book is highly recommended for those who are experiencing stress and anxiety that arise because they feel rushed by time and only focus on ‘the next thing’.

It’s Okay for Depression

Depression does not define anything in humans.

“Recession is a period where you tighten your belt, while depression is a time when you don’t have a belt to tighten!”. 😇

Keep Alive

Phenomenon that can be experienced by every human being on earth.

Depression is one of the human cognitive diseases that not only affects the psyche but also the human body and is not like physical pain that can be seen clearly. Depression is a real phenomenon that is very close to humans and can be experienced by anyone. It is difficult to explain specifically what depression is like. Everyone who has a history of depression, feels different things and impresses with their depressed experience. However, unfortunately there are many stigmas and stereotypes in our society regarding depression and depression sufferers. Until finally it caused false judgement and labeling on them.😊

#MattHaig, a novelist and journalist living in Brighton, England, describes his phenomenological experience of depression and anxiety through this book. He tells series of experiences depression and anxiety that go through this book. #MattHaig once tried to commit suicide by the edge of a cliff when he was 24 years old.📖

Not just telling stories about the experiences of depression experienced, #MattHaig also suggests how to deal with people who are depressed or experiencing anxiety in the form of:
👭People with depression need friends.
👂Listen.
💕Give love with warmth.
🧠Depression is a mental illness.
ℹ️ Looking for in-depth information about depression.
😡Don’t get carried away with emotion.
😇Patient.
🙆Understand the condition of people with depression.
😣Helps reduce workloads (if possible).
🙅No labeling and judgement.

This book invites readers to empathize with the experiences of depression and anxiety even though the reader has never experienced depression or anxiety in life. #MattHaig provides readers with new insights if the disorder in the form of depression and anxiety can be overcome. The most important point in this book is that depression can be experienced by anyone on this earth without exception. Indirectly, depression shows the existence in human beings who always think with their lives. ☺️

Just Let It Go

This week’s book review is related to last week’s book review on how to address life that will not be as beautiful.

#LeoBabauta is a blogger living in San Francisco, the creator of Zen Habits https://zenhabits.net/ a blog that contains writings about simplicity. He writes about what is the definition of being letting go, the reason why you need to be letting go and how to practice being letting go.📖

Having ideal dreams or hopes is a natural thing for every human being. However, this will be dangerous when it has become an illusion and controls every behavior in life and will eventually lead to new problems such as stress, frustration, disappointment, feeling right, feeling insulted, feeling hurt, and controlled by anger.☺️

Being letting go with all kinds of problems faced is not an easy thing but this needs to be done because not everything will happen according to the ideal dream. Can humans not have ideal dreams or hopes? Of course we can, but what we need to realize is that not all things will happen according to our ideal dreams or hopes. Life is not something that can be controlled with ideal dreams or hopes.

Being letting go does not mean:
➡️Give up
➡️Not trying
➡️Do not develop
➡️Become a victim
➡️Make the world right better
➡️Releasing existing normative standards,
☑️Being letting go is accepting all possible realities that occur without the control of life.

This book invites readers to have simple skills in being letting go in life with real examples of everyday life problems. This book is highly recommended for them (maybe a lot of us) who want to change lives to feel light and not have a burden on life.📖😊

Worry And Hope Are Friends

When the weather is hot, keep a cool mind. When the weather is cold, keep a warm heart.

– Ajahn Brahm

Humans are always worried about their lives and their future. Concern is something that can’t be avoided in the 21st century. However, when humans experience concern this shows that we are an existential being who always think with our life.

#DontWorryBeHopey is a collection of short stories written by #AjahnBrahm, a monk who lives in Perth, Western Australia. He wrote down the problems of human life which are often faced as existential beings in the form of stories with simple language, light, entertaining, hilarious but have deep meaning. 📖

Angry. Happy. Disappointed. Confusion. Stressful. Frustration. Sad. Trauma. Happy. Praised. Reproached. Profit. Loss. Crime. Split with loved ones. Meet the hated. Until God and death are the topics discussed in this book. Many of us do not realize that the complexity of the problems we face is not because of the problem itself, but because the perspective on the problem is excessive in reacting to life. Not infrequently these problems raise concerns and loss of hope in life. Besides that, the good and bad dichotomy seems to be a friend in every human act even though who knows about good and bad because they are very relative.

The story in this book invites readers to be more aware of the problems faced and not just to feel worried and hopeful in life. Worrying is a natural thing, but worrying too much will cause anxiety. Hoping is also natural but too much hope will lead to disappointment.😊

So just enjoy every life moment✌️😄

We Haven’t Arrived There

Finding yourself = creating yourself.

— Mari Andrew.

Being mature seems very complicated and frightening. “what should I do after graduating from bachelor?”, “working?”, “started new business ?”, “continue my master degree?”. “married?”,”what is my passion and skills?” “what is the purpose of my life?”, “what will I be in the future? “, and other questions that gave rise to a self crisis at the age of 20s, the early adult stage in life.

Am I There Yet ? was written based on the personal journey of the author Mari Andrew, a writer and an illustrator, who experienced many events in her life. Move to a new city, get a new place to live, start a new job after graduation, get out of work and get a rejection from her dream job. However, when her father died, she felt she had gotten a turning point in her life and began to question the purpose of life. Until finally she decided to do solo traveling in several countries and cities and from her decision she met new people and new experiences.

Not only that, in this book also tells how the author experienced disappointment when she fell in her life, made a fairly complicated decision, failure in problems of love and achievement that she had gotten during her 20s. At the end of this book the author invites readers to better recognize themselves with ‘creating yourself’ and ‘self discovery’ because this method is the most tangible way to deal with a future that is still a mystery and we have not faced it. This book is highly recommended for those who are experiencing a life crisis and always question their identity. 📖☺
